In Bangladesh, women empowerment is receiving the utmost importance both in the public and private sectors.

Traditionally women are treated inferior to men. So, they live in a male-dominated society. They are often deprived of proper education and care. They have almost no economic security. Besides, violence against women is alarmingly high. Women are also physically and sexually harassed in their families and job places. However, this scenario is changing gradually in Bangladesh.

Women empowerment is essential to ensure sustainable development. Women constitute almost half of our total population. Empowered women can resist oppression and violence. They can take part in decision making. They can also ensure their inheritance of property and other ownership rights.

Ways to empower women

Proper education for women is the first step to women’s empowerment. They should have knowledge of their rights, health issues, gender equality, etc. Besides, women should be employed in suitable jobs. Their workplaces should also be made safe and secure. Steps should be taken to increase their income and savings. On the other hand, women’s participation in politics, and the administration have to be ensured.

Article 28, Chapter 3 of the Bangladesh constitution mentions the fundamental rights of women. The government has made laws and has undertaken many projects to ensure women’s rights. Education for girls upto the H.S.C level has been made free. Today women have participated in our parliament, administration, business, and everywhere. Still, there are some barriers to women’s empowerment. These are mostly cultural, traditional, or religious.


Empowerment enables women to work side by side with men in all development activities. Empowered women to achieve economic and political power. Thus, the empowerment of women can ensure sustainable development. Bangladesh is working hard to ensure women’s empowerment. The days are not far when women will enjoy the same rights as men.
